Safeguarding & Child Protection Policy
Information for Parents and Carers
1. Our Commitment to Safeguarding
At Ogden Otters, the safety and wellbeing of every child in our care is our highest priority.
We want every child who attends Ogden Otters to feel safe, valued, listened to and respected, while being able to enjoy their swimming lessons, develop confidence and thrive within our swimming school.
This policy explains the safeguarding principles we follow, the steps we take to help protect children, what parents and carers can expect from us, and what to do if you ever have a concern about the welfare or safety of a child.
2. Our Safeguarding Principles
Ogden Otters believes that children and young people should never experience abuse, neglect or harm of any kind.
The welfare of the child is paramount. Every child has the right to feel safe and receive appropriate protection, regardless of their age, disability, race, religion or belief, sex, sexual orientation, gender reassignment, background, communication needs or individual circumstances.
We recognise that some children may be more vulnerable than others and may require additional consideration or support. We believe safeguarding works best when children, parents and carers, our staff and appropriate external agencies work together.
3. How We Help Keep Children Safe
We have safeguarding procedures in place throughout Ogden Otters. These include:
• A Designated Safeguarding Lead responsible for overseeing safeguarding within the organisation.
• Appropriate safer recruitment procedures and checks for staff working directly with children.
• Safeguarding training for staff, and clear professional standards and codes of conduct.
• Procedures for reporting, recording and responding to safeguarding concerns.
• Procedures relating to photography, images, mobile phones and electronic devices.
• Appropriate adult-to-child supervision arrangements and anti-bullying procedures.
• Health and safety procedures designed to provide a safe environment.
• Secure and confidential recording of safeguarding information.
4. Listening to Children
Children should feel able to speak to a member of the Ogden Otters team if something is worrying them. If a child tells us something that raises a safeguarding concern, we will listen carefully and take what they tell us seriously.
We cannot promise a child that information concerning their safety will remain secret. Where necessary, information will be shared with the appropriate people or agencies to help keep that child or another child safe.
5. If We Have a Concern About a Child
If a member of our team becomes concerned about the safety or welfare of a child, the concern will be reported to our Designated Safeguarding Lead and recorded in accordance with our safeguarding procedures.
Where appropriate, we will work with parents and carers when addressing concerns. However, there may be circumstances where information needs to be shared with safeguarding professionals, the local authority or Police without first discussing this with a parent or carer, particularly where doing so could place a child at greater risk.
6. If You Have a Concern
We want parents and carers to tell us if they see, hear or experience anything at Ogden Otters that causes them concern. This could relate to: a child’s welfare or safety; the behaviour of a member of staff or another adult; bullying or inappropriate behaviour between children; inappropriate photography or use of electronic devices; something a child has told you; or anything else that makes you feel that a child may be at risk.
You do not need to be certain that something is wrong before raising a safeguarding concern. Please speak to a member of staff and ask for the concern to be passed immediately to our Designated Safeguarding Lead.
Designated Safeguarding Lead: Samantha Wright
All concerns will be taken seriously and handled as sensitively and confidentially as possible.
7. Concerns About a Member of Staff
If your concern relates to the behaviour of a member of the Ogden Otters team, please report it to the Designated Safeguarding Lead.
We will take any allegation or concern about someone working with children seriously and follow the appropriate safeguarding procedures. Depending upon the nature of the concern, this may involve referral to external safeguarding professionals or the Local Authority Designated Officer (LADO).
The safety and welfare of the child will always come first.
8. Working Together With Parents and Carers
Parents and carers have an important part to play in helping us maintain a safe environment. We ask you to follow Ogden Otters policies and procedures, treat children, families and staff respectfully, supervise children appropriately before and after their lesson where they remain in your care, respect other children’s privacy (particularly in changing areas), follow our photography and recording rules, and raise any safeguarding concern rather than assuming somebody else will do so.
Safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility.
9. Confidentiality and Information Sharing
Safeguarding information is treated sensitively and stored securely. Information will only be shared when appropriate and with people or organisations who need the information in order to protect a child, meet our safeguarding responsibilities or comply with the law.
10. External Safeguarding Contacts
Parents and carers can also raise safeguarding concerns independently.

11. Our Commitment
Safeguarding is not simply a policy at Ogden Otters. It is part of how we operate our swimming school every day.
We will continue to review our safeguarding arrangements, train our team, listen to children and families and take appropriate action whenever a concern is raised.
Every child deserves to feel safe, respected and able to enjoy learning to swim.
